Nail Polish from Claire’s Changes
You have probably already heard about chameleon nail polish. Some fashion-lovers use them quite regularly. Those nail polishes change color depending on the angle of light. How about innovative nail polish, which changes color in response to your mood?
How would it determine the mood? Very easy – as the temperature of the environment or body changes the substance changes its color. Indeed, when we go outside we usually put on some outerwear and thus need different nail color to match it.
One of the most popular maker of such nail polish is the brand Claire’s. We present to your attention two versions of this moody-innovation. On the photos, the models put their hands in water for a reason. This way they were trying to capture color change by using cold water first and then changing to warm water.
Under normal temperature the color of the nail polish will not look uniform because nails tend to have different temperature along their surface: colder at the tips and warmer where in contact with the body. Thus, we get interesting two-tone effect.
Perhaps we will soon have nail polish that changes in response to human voice or musical tone.

Hair Partings
Hair partings are the focal point of a hairstyle. They should be neat and clean for a good appearance. If you are not careful on how to use a parting, it can enhance or mar the total look.
A hairstylist must always work according to the natural parting or a precise centre parting and natural hair stream for required flexibility, which is quite important in changing and maintaining a style. If you suggest to your client to change his parting, ask him to gradually shift the parting after every hair wash so that his hair gets adjusted over time. Sometimes, when styling according to the facial contour and texture, it is difficult to incorporate the natural parting in the style, it is advisable to keep changing the parting.
Finding the Natural Parting
Comb freshly shampooed hair back and place the right palm on the crown, pushing the hair forward slightly. The hair will separate at the natural part.
Types of Hair Partings
Partings must suit the facial contour and hide the facial flaws like imperfect features and defective growth pattern. Partings normally taken are:
1. Centre Parting Centre parting is most suited on an oval face and gives an oval illusion to wide and very round faces. People with prominent noses and oblong faces should avoid centre parts. Always try to create a hairstyle that gives an optical illusion of ovalness to the face. |
2. Side Parting This is the most suitable to round and square faces that require height on top and heart-shaped faces that require decreased width of the forehead. It also makes thin hair appear fuller. |
3. Diagonal Parting Diagonal parting is used to give height to round and square faces. A truly asymmetrical element of hair design, the diagonal parting can be used to direct the amount of volume in the style in one direction or another. It is especially good for styles that want a wide sweep of hair in the foreground of the style. Diagonal partings are also used in many up-styles to hide foundational elements of the style and prevent 'holes' in the finished hair-do. |
4. Zigzag Parting Zigzag parting is suitable to all the shapes of the face. A zigzag parting does look best on hair that is dense on the scalp, because the denser the hair growth, the cleaner the partings will appear. For hair that is sparsely spaced on the scalp, consider the criss-cross parting. This allows you to create an illusion of more hair on the head without resorting to a 'puffed-up' style. |

Hair Stripping
Hair strippers are chemical treatments which are intended to strip out artificial color pigment with less risk or damage to the hair. The chemicals used are called reducing agents.
However, the action of stripping inevitably leads to weakening of the hair structure however ideal the condition prevailing, no matter what chemicals are used. Furthermore, hair stripping rarely proceeds evenly; resistant red pigments may be left' behing to give unsightly streaks in the hair shaft.
The action of a stripper is to break up the red pigments into small colorless particles. These fragments can then be easily rinsed out through the cuticle. The alkaline content of the stripper causes the cuticle to swell even more than when the hair was being tinted. The alkali opens the keratin chain the weakens the bonds holding the tint pigment to the hair protein.
Because the hair has been excessively softened during this process, it is essential that a thorough rinsing be carried out to remove all traces of the stripper. After rinsing, it is vital that the hair be reconditioned. The acid content of the conditioning cream will restore some of the body to the hair and will make it easier to manage giving the set more holding power.
Alkali strippers leave the hair in a very dry state. Although creams are included in the stripper itself, they only help prevent excessive hair damage and not really condition the hair. Mere ringing of the stripper will not bring the hair back to its normal acid Ph on reform the bonds in the cortex broken by the alkali.
Certain 'metal' strippers containing sodium sulphoites are sold for reducing hair dyed with metallic dyes, as these dyes react violently with tint stripper containing hydrogen peroxide-the subsequent reaction may cause so much heat that the hair gets dissolved.
Often grey hair treated with the so called hair restorers contain metal salts or often lead sulphide which darkens the hair. With this dyed hair, even metal strippers are not effective. In fact, the only real way to remove metallic dyes is to cut off that portion of the hair strand as soon as sufficient growth has taken place.
Hair Cutting Tools
You must not compromise on the quality of the implements you use; working with imperfect tools can give unpleasant results. So, look out for good, branded ones.
Improper use of superior implements too can produce unpleasant resu1ts, however perfectly they might be made at any reliable factory.1) Scissors
This is the most important tool in haircutting. Both blades should be equally balanced, smooth, and sharp at the tip and the edges.
The correct way to handle scissors is by inserting the ring finger into the ring of the still blade, and placing the little finger on the finger brace. The thumb is inserted into the ring of the movable blade and the index finger is placed on the pivot of the still blade in order to have better control.
2) Section Clips
They are used to take out sections and clipping the hair out of the way while cutting.
3) Combs
Cutting combs are less wide and have narrow spaces on one end and wider spaces on the other. The thumb and index finger are used to hold the comb. While combing, the blades of the scissors are closed, and the thumb is removed from the ring.
4) Thinning Scissors
These tools have single or double-thinning blades, depending on the amount of thinning required. They are quite similar to hair-cutting scissors and are held in the same way, except that they have one or both blades serrated.
5) Razors
Basiclly, there are two types of razors:
(a) One that is used to clean men's neck hair and give a neat hairline and side bums.
(b) The other type of razor is used for tapering hair ends in a layer cut.
It is held by placing three fingers over the shank, the thumb in the groove of the shank and the little finger in the hollow part of the tang.
6) Clippers
These are useful for cleaning the nape area and cutting short hair.can be fitted with a nozzle for concentrated heat or with a diffuser to prevent hair from being blown away. These professional dryers have hot and cool settings to provide maximum comfort to the scalp and long-lasting hair sets.
8) Apron
This is used to protect you and your clothes.
9) Water Spray Bottle
This is used for wetting hair.
10) Nape Brush
This is used to apply talcum powder and clean away hair that has been cut.
11) Brushes
These are naturally bristled and are used to untangle and set hair in shape. They can also be used on the scalp in a rolling movement to loosen dead cells and debris
Hair Straightening
Just like people go into great lengths to get their hair permed due to various reasons, similarly people with naturally curly hair go into great lengths to get their hair straightened. Amazingly on some faces, straight hair appear lifeless and on some faces, curly hair looks ugly and untidy. Therefore, straightening is equally well practiced as permanent waving. The common link between the two changes is their chemical involvement.
The practice of hair straightening involves two major steps:
- It breaks the S (Sulphur) bonds and the N (Nitrogen) bonds in the cortex during the processing time which softens the hair.
- The use of neutralizer works as a fixative which is necessary to restore the N and S bonds to rejoin the hair and make the hair acquire the desired straightness.
Due to the chemical involvement, the hair may get damaged. To avoid that, the first step should be to analyses the hair texture accurately.
The chemicals should never be allowed to penetrate the scalp. Therefore, it should be understood that the new growth at the scalp would acquire the original curly nature. Since the maximum hair growth in a month is of about 3/4 of an inch, you needs to do hair straightened again. Straightening is the reverse of permanent waving, that means, in this process, you make the curly hair straight by using chemical straighteners. We should be very careful while using these chemicals because sometimes it goes wrong and the client may start losing hair, so always consult your client before you start.
Points to remember before hair straightening
- Texture of the hair.
- Length of the hair.
Procedure of hair straightening
- Shampoo the hair; conditioner can be used if the hair is chemically treated or damaged.
- Make straightening gel by mixing white flour (maida), perm lotion and conditioner to avoid dryness.
- Start from the back by taking horizontal sections.
- Make sure that the hair is tangle free and neat before you start putting the file board.
- Heavier the hair, smaller should be the section.
- Put gel on the board and comb it through. Gel should not touch the scalp.
- Leave the gel on for 10 to 40 minutes depending on the texture. Rinse it well by using pressure water for 10 to 40 minutes.
- The board will come out automatically with the pressure of the water.
- After rinsing, comb the hair straight and leave it for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Put the neutralizer on the hair for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Rinse the neutralizer; use conditioner and comb it.
- Always go for a cut after straightening to make the hair even. Always cut the hair at 0° angle to avoid layers. Straight cut is recommended for a much neater and healthier look.
This straightening procedure is safe on the hair as there is no pulling.
