India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir pulled off an impressive run chase to beat Sri Lanka by six wickets in the ICC Cricket World Cup final in Mumbai.
Fabulous comeback from Sri Lanka to post a mammoth target in front of the hosts! It was India who started well with the ball, fielded brilliantly and straightaway put the opposition on the back foot. Mahela Jayawardena was the super star with the bat, notching up an awe-inspiring century and steering his side to a very challenging total. He shared a few crucial partnerships with skipper Sangakkara, Samaraweera and Kulasekara. Perera(22 off 9) went berserk towards the end and gathered 18 runs from Zaheer's last over. The Indian bowling looked hapless in the death overs and completely lost the plot. The Batting Powerplay fetched them 63/1 and overall 91/1 came in the last 10 overs.
The fourth-wicket pair ensured India did not panic in front of a capacity home crowd after the early loss of big guns Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar in pursuit of 274 for six.with 97 for Gambhir and Jayawardene's third World Cup century, three other world-class performers took centre stage in a contest just shaded by India. It was Dhoni (91no) who completed the job, after promoting himself to number five and producing his first half-century of the campaign in a telling stand of 106 with Gambhir and then an unbroken 54 with Yuvraj Singh.
Finally the mega event, Cricket World Cup 2011, comes to a close! 14 teams participated and as predicted, India lived up to their 'favourites' tag and coveted the trophy. Sri Lanka finished second best but there were sparkling performances from South Africa and Pakistan
